Edward Stanford, MD, FACOG
Gains National Recognition

Edward J. Stanford, MD, FACOG, has authored a physician educational pamphlet entitled Chronic Pelvic Pain 2001.

Dr. Stanford, is one of only approximately 500 physicians nationwide specializing in urogynecology and urodynamics, and the only physician in Southern Illinois to offer this highly specialized level of care.

Chronic Pelvic Pain (CPP) is a pervasive women's health problem and is estimated to affect 1 in 7 women, or approximately 9 million US women, with associated healthcare costs approaching $3 billion annually.

Fortunately, with the right information patients can find relief from inaccurate diagnosis and unnecessary treatments - including unnecessary surgeries.

"Educating physicians (OB/GYNs, Family Practice, Internists and Surgeons) about our new research findings and the new approaches to treating CCP is a positive step for our patients. Too many women suffer needlessly. I hope the information we are coming up with helps them, commented Dr. Stanford.

Dr. Stanford attracts patients from throughout Illinois and the surrounding states who are seeking specialized medical attention for pelvic pain and incontinence. Drawing from years of experience, Dr. Stanford developed an algorithm for management of chronic pelvic pain, which is outlined in the publication.

"I have been to doctors from all over -- Springfield, St. Louis and none of them could help me the way Dr. Stanford has. Before I saw Dr. Stanford, I had 11 surgeries in 10 years. I heard about Dr. Stanford through the grapevine, but given my medical history, I was a little discouraged - having been through so much. The first time I met him, Dr. Stanford spent an hour with me one on one. He listened to all that I had been through and then told me he thought he could help me," commented Shelly Sligar, a patient of Dr. Stanford's who was diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis, a leading cause of CPP.

"I will never forget hearing him tell me that he could help make me better -- and he did."

Since 1999, Dr. Stanford has been recognized as a national leader in the area of methods to improve women's health. Dr. Stanford has traveled internationally to present research findings relevant to women's health issues and continues to have his works published in medical journals focused on women's health. Dr. Stanford has recently authored a chapter on "Abnormal and Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding" published in the Obstetrics Gynecology Principles for Practice.

In addition to these publications, Dr. Stanford is a member of the faculty that will be conducting an upcoming continuing medical eduation training course on Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery to be held in Cincinnati, Ohio.
